Description

The Westland Whirlwind was a British helicopter that was a license-built version of the Sikorsky S-55 . It was one of the first helicopters to be produced on a large scale in Great Britain and was used primarily for military purposes .

Initially manufactured purely under license , the fuselage of the Whirlwind was specially modified by developing its own engines in the bow area , which made it externally distinguishable from the S-55 .

An interesting feature of the Whirlwind was its relatively large cabin , which could accommodate a crew and passengers . Its use also included various military operations , including supporting troops in the field .
