The Hawker Hurricane is a British fighter aircraft designed by the Hawker Aircraft Company in the 1930s . It first entered service in 1935 and rose to fame during World War II , particularly during the Battle of Britain , where it played a key role in the country's defence along with the Supermarine Spitfire .

The Hurricane is notable for its robust design and ability to fight effectively against both enemy aircraft and ground targets . With its blend of speed , maneuverability and firepower, it was one of the best fighters in the world in its early years. The aircraft type was designed as a single-wing low-wing monoplane with a mid-wing section and metal and fabric construction, and featured a powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine .

In total, over 14,000 Hurricane models were built, and they remained in service until after the war in a variety of roles, including fighter-bomber and trainer . The Hurricane is now considered one of the most famous aircraft of World War II.
