The Grumman F9F Cougar was a single-engine jet fighter aircraft of the United States Navy that served in the 1950s . A development of the Grumman F9F Panther , the Cougar had a great design and was designed for use on aircraft carriers .

The aircraft was equipped with a jet engine and featured an enclosed cabin and retractable landing gear . The F9F Cougar was known for its high speed and maneuverability . It was primarily used for air superiority and attack missions and was also available in several variants for different missions , including training and reconnaissance .

The F9F Cougar made its first flight in 1951 and remained in active service until the early 1960s . It played a significant role in the Korean War and was valued by the Navy and Marine Corps . It was also used by the US Navy 's Blue Angels aerobatic team .
