Description

The Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II , often simply referred to as the A-10 , is an American ground attack aircraft developed by Fairchild Republic in the late 1960s . It is used for use against ground targets and armored vehicles . Distinctive design features include the heavily armored cockpit , the two side-mounted and high-mounted turbofan engines , self-sealing tanks and the extremely powerful seven-barreled GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling cannon , which required the nose gear to be installed offset to the side. This cannon is capable of firing up to 3,900 rounds per minute .

The A-10 can also be loaded with a multitude of bombs and guided missiles . The A-10 is currently only used by the USAF .
