Originally planned as a short-haul aircraft , the 737 is now a medium-haul aircraft , with the latest versions (737 MAX) also being used on long-haul routes. During the design, many components from the Boeing 707 and 727 were adopted, which accelerated development.

The early versions of the 737 were characterized by the engines being mounted directly under the wing due to the short landing gear. In the early 1980s, the first changes to the 737 began, mainly affecting the engines (which were now mounted on pylons in front of the wing) and the cockpit . In the 1990s, the 737 underwent significant changes (e.g. wings , avionics , landing gear ), resulting in the longest variant to date, the 737-900 . In 2011, a new generation was introduced with the 737 MAX , but it contained significant technical problems .
