Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird

The SR-71 was developed from the Lockheed A-12, which had already been in use in the early 1960s . Initially kept secret, the Blackbird was officially introduced as a reconnaissance aircraft in 1964. The SR-71 was made largely of titanium due to the outside temperatures caused by the high speeds. Attempts were also made to reduce the radar cross-section. A major problem was the expansion of the fuselage during supersonic flight. The SR-71 was therefore built in such a way that gaps were created in various components on the ground. This also affected the tanks , which led to the development of a special, difficult-to-ignite fuel .

The SR-71 also set several records, including the fastest ever transatlantic crossing at 1 hour 54 minutes .

The last flight of an SR-71 took place in 1999. Many surviving examples are on display in museums; the only SR-71 in Europe can be seen at the IWM Duxford .
