Description

The only twin-engine X-3 built was designed to enable sustained flight at twice the speed of sound, the use of very short wings and the construction of the airframe from titanium .

However, difficulties in developing the originally planned Westinghouse J46 engines forced the use of the much weaker J34 engines , preventing the X-3 from reaching its Mach 2 potential . Nevertheless, the data gained during the X-3 program greatly benefited the F-104 , the X-15 , the SR-71 and other high-performance aircraft .
