Description

The Fokker E.III is a single-engine fighter aircraft that was developed by Fokker from the original Fokker M.5 during the First World War . Another aircraft developed from it, the Fokker E.II , was the direct predecessor of the E.III. The EI already featured an interrupter gear that made it possible to fire through the rotating propeller with the machine gun mounted in front of the pilot. This advantage briefly gave German pilots air superiority , but was quickly overtaken by the development of Allied aircraft made in England and France, and the E.III was withdrawn from the Western Front in 1916. A few Fokker monoplanes were still in service on the Eastern Front until 1917 .
