Fairey Battle

The Fairey Battle was a British military aircraft developed in the 1930s as a replacement for the Hawker Hart by the British company Fairey Aviation Company . It was a single-engine bomber aircraft used primarily in the early years of World War II .

It was equipped with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine , which enabled a maximum speed of about 400 km/h . The Fairey Battle 's operational range included both bombing raids and reconnaissance missions .

Although the Fairey Battle was initially considered a modern and promising bomber aircraft , it quickly became apparent that in practice it was vulnerable to attack, especially against the air defenses and fighters of the German Luftwaffe .

Due to the heavy losses already suffered at the beginning of the Second World War, the Fairey Battle was quickly withdrawn and used only as a training aircraft . However, it was still in use as a flying engine test bed until 1949 .

Post-war use : Some of the surviving aircraft were used by other air forces and were modified in the post-war period not only for military but also for civilian use .
