F-105 Thunderchief

The F-105 Thunderchief , often referred to as the " Thud ", was an American fighter and fighter-bomber aircraft developed by the Republic Aviation Company in the 1950s and intended for use in the Vietnam War . It had strongly swept wings and the flat-neck shape of the fuselage that was characteristic of the time.

The F-105 was one of the fastest aircraft of its time and had the ability to carry both conventional and nuclear bombs . The aircraft was relatively large and offered a well-armored cockpit area, making it a robust operational tool.

The F-105 rose to prominence during the Vietnam War , but was also criticized for high losses and difficulty in targeting during bombing. The last F-105s were retired in the 1980s . In total, over 800 units were built, and it played a significant role in the history of military aviation .

It gained notoriety due to its extremely short service with the USAF Thunderbirds . After only 6 shows and a tragic accident, it was immediately replaced by the F-100D Super Sabre .
